Refrigeration projects in the South West
Ian Hobbs Technical Services Ltd have completed a wide range of refrigeration projects across Bristol, Bath and the South West. Contact us to find out more or read some of our case studies below for examples of our past work.
Cold-room Panelling and Refrigeration Equipment
“We chose to use Ian Hobbs for our large abattoir redevelopment. Hobbs were competitively priced against other companies and their quality of work and expertise was excellent. Their staff on site were always tidy, co operative with other contractors and efficient”
– Stuart Perkins, Director at Castlemead Poultry
Run by Stuart Perkins, Castlemead Poultry is a leading producer of fine free range chicken, eggs and Christmas Poultry. They are passionate about providing local outlets and local customers with the best quality locally produced chicken.
Stuart also wanted to use local suppliers and contractors in the construction of his new processing plant and Ian Hobbs Technical Services were brought in to design, supply and install various cold rooms and refrigeration equipment for the new processing plant at Stuart’s farm.
Spec: To supply and install 100mm PIR insulation panelling and ceilings to all chilled temperature areas plus the staff area, staff toilets and office area and to install a low temperature condensing unit and evaporator to maintain the freezer coldroom at -20C°
To install a refrigeration pack and remote air cooled condenser with suitable valves and controls coupled to individual evaporators in each room to maintain the chilled areas at the temperatures indicated on the plan provided. Each room will have a control panel to give individual temperature and defrost control with constant digital temperature display indicating room temperature.
The large scale project went to plan and the project was completed in December 2014. Photographs of the progress and completed project can be seen above. Castlemead Poultry are to be on a planned preventative maintenance contract to ensure the units continue to run efficiently and safely in the future.
Below, you can see a time lapse video of some of the work carried out at the Castlemead site:
Renrod Motor Group
Vauxhall, Nissan, Renault & Toyota Air Conditioning Installation
Platinum Motor Group drives forward with efficiency
Leading South West car dealership, Platinum Motor Group, has invested in the future with a brand new air conditioning system at two of their sites in Trowbridge. Founded in 1975, Platinum Motor Group has steadily expanded, establishing itself as one of the leading dealerships in the South West.
Ian Hobbs Technical Services were approached by the Platinum Motor Group last year for a proposal to replace the heating and cooling air conditioning equipment throughout the Nissan, Renault, Vauxhall and Toyota dealerships in Trowbridge Meridian Motor Park. The dealerships had existing units which were causing day to day issues so they were investing in new equipment to overcome these issues and to be more energy efficient. Director Lee Hobbs explains:
“Platinum Motor Group has had a number of issues with their previous system. The existing equipment was inefficient and problematic and we regularly had to replace compressors which was proving to be very costly. The communication between the separate pieces of equipment was also proving to be a problem as all of the units were functioning on either heating or cooling only mode.”
We decommissioned, removed and disposed of all existing Toshiba equipment including all pipe-work, interconnecting and all ancillaries associated with the current installation.
The new Installation consisted of a City Multi Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) system. Mitsubishi Electric’s VRF offers simultaneous heating and cooling that Platinum’s previous system did not, by distributing surplus heat from cooling operations (and vice versa) to rooms where it is needed. This efficiency can result in energy savings of up to 30 per cent over conventional systems.
Each site was also fitted with an AE-200E central controller which utilises a large, back-lit display, to enable the control of temperature, fan speed and airflow options. It also provides comprehensive energy consumption monitoring and comparisons with the previous year’s power consumption.
One of our biggest challenges was that the installation had to be carried out whilst the sites continued to operate as normal. Lee says:
“Our main objective with this installation was to cause the minimum amount of disruption so that Platinum Motor Group could carry on with business as normal. Sometimes the staff were required to move offices for a day but this was kept to a minimum as the majority of the pipe work was in the corridor so we were able to work around them.
Platinum Motor Group now has a heating and cooling system which they can rely on and which will allow them to concentrate on their main job of providing a first class service to each of their customers. The new air conditioning installation is maintained and serviced by Ian Hobbs Technical Services under a maintenance contract agreement.

Farrington Co-operative Store
After successfully tendering for the air conditioning and refrigeration contract, Ian Hobbs Technical Services role in the re-development was to fully manage, install and commission the refrigeration and air conditioning systems for the store. Our approach to energy consumption is simple; reduce consumption across their business units with more efficient equipment.
Our installation team worked alongside the shop fitting company with only 4 weeks to complete the entire store. During this short period of time, we carried out the refurbishment of a cold room, extension a new freezer cold room onto the existing, installed Mitsubishi air conditioning, low energy chiller and freezer cabinets as well as a full installation of heat recovery and ventilation in the staff area and toilets. Radstock Co-operative Society
The Radstock Co-operative Society are an independent, member owned co-operative retailer with a superstore and numerous convenience stores around Somerset. Radstock Co-operative Society are a long term existing customer and asked Ian Hobbs Technical Services to design the refrigeration and air conditioning systems specifically to meet the needs of the superstore. Our role in the re-development was to fully manage, install and commission the refrigeration and air conditioning systems for the store. Our approach to energy consumption is simple; reduce consumption across the business by using energy efficient equipment.
Our installation team worked alongside the shop fitting company and during this period of time, we carried out full installation of air conditioning, low energy chiller and freezer cabinets as well as a 70kw dual temperature 10 scroll compressor external pack. All refrigerated cabinets were installed with full RDM digital control systems and data management systems.
